About CIPRA

The Centre for Intellectual Property Research and Advocacy- CIPRA is an integral part of Symbiosis Law School, Hyderabad, established to develop research and advocacy skills in aspiring lawyers with special emphasis on Intellectual Property Rights and promote knowledge of this emerging field of law. Since its inception in 2016, CIPRA has been executing various activities to further its goals, which include encouraging research in every subject area and promoting and spreading awareness about IPR among students and the public at large with various practical approaches. It actively involves students in workshops, competitions, discussions, and debates. In less than eight years, CIPRA has combined valuable work and contributed to the various communities of society and the forum of Indian IPR, especially concerning Geographical Indications.

About the Event

Fathom is a two-day online workshop on Digital Fashion and IPR. It is designed to explore the latest trends in fashion and technology, specifically the impact of intellectual properties, the metaverse and NFTs on the fashion industry. The Workshop will be led by industry experts and is designed to offer practical insights that enable participants to deepen their understanding of the digital fashion landscape.

During the Workshop, the participants will gain an understanding of the metaverse and how it can be leveraged to create and sell digital fashion. They will also explore the challenges of protecting intellectual property in the digital world, with special emphasis on the role of copyright law in safeguarding creative works.

In addition, the Workshop will delve into the world of NFTs, which are unique digital assets stored on a blockchain. Participants will learn how NFTs can be used to authenticate and sell digital fashion and the potential implications of this technology on the fashion industry. 

By the end of the Workshop, participants will be equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate the rapidly-evolving digital fashion landscape.

The Workshop is divided into three modules:

  • Module 1: Façade (5th May, 2023 from 10:00am-12:30pm)

This module on IPR (Intellectual Property Rights) in the fashion industry covers protecting creative works, trademarks, patents, copyrights along with other IPs. It also delves into the issue of greenwashing and sustainability in fashion, which has become increasingly important in recent years. As sustainability continues to gain importance in the fashion industry, companies must ensure that their marketing claims are truthful and not deceptive. The Module highlights the importance of understanding the legal and ethical aspects of sustainability in fashion and the role of IPR in promoting sustainable practices. By the end of the module, participants will have a deeper understanding of IPR in the fashion industry and the importance of sustainable practices in fashion.

  • Module 2: Crypto Couture (5th May, 2023 from 2:00pm-4:30pm)

The second module of the Workshop focuses on crypto fashion and blockchain and explores the impact of these technologies on the fashion industry. The Module examines the use of blockchain technology to authenticate digital fashion and protect intellectual property rights. With the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, the fashion industry has seen a significant shift towards online and digital platforms, making using blockchain and other cryptographic technologies increasingly important. The Module highlights the opportunities and challenges presented by these technologies in the current climate and their potential impact on the fashion industry’s future.

  • Module 3: Beyond the Pixels (6th May, 2023 from 10:00am-12:30pm)

The last module on metaverse and digital fashion explores the growing trend of NFTs (non-fungible tokens) and digital fashion in video games. The Module examines the challenges of protecting intellectual property in the virtual world and the importance of copyright law in safeguarding creative works. With the increasing popularity of the metaverse and virtual worlds, the fashion industry has seen a significant shift towards creating and selling digital fashion, including using NFTs. The Module highlights the opportunities and challenges presented by these technologies in terms of IPR, including the importance of authentication and the potential for infringement. By the end of the module, participants will have a deeper understanding of IPR in the context of the metaverse and the growing trend of digital fashion in NFTs and video games.
